| Roman Route | |||
| Torrox has, lthough the most actual historical traces of
the settlement in Torrox correspond to the Roman civilization, confirmed
their earliest existence was by Phoenicians and Punics. In fact, around the 1st century, the Roman city-factory of Caviclum was founded on the coast. It was a village with a plant where the garum, a basic fish sauce of the Roman diet, was elaborated. Although during centuries the farmers dug up old remains with their ploughs, the first organised excavation was made by the lighthouse's guard in 1905. Ruins of many houses, of a necropolis, the salteries of garum and thermal baths were dug up as well as numerous household objects, sculptures and mosaics. In 1970, during the construction of a urbanization, ceramic ovens were found. The researches established that it was Caviclum, a city mentioned in the itinerary of Antonino. Its remains can be visited today near the lighthouse. |

| Almanzor's Route | |
| According to legend, the leader Abderraman lived here,
after the landing in Almuñécar, a village of Granada, in September 775.
Some historians confirmed once again that Almanzor was born in the Castillo
Alto of Torrox, in 938. At the time of the conquest in 1487, the actual village of Torrox was composed by three farmsteads situated near the Castle. They were almost united physically but they were organized as independent villages. They were: Alhaguer, Almedina and a half kilometre to the south, was situated Alhandae. This one was transformed later by the Christians with the name of Alhandiga and some years later they joined the three farmsteads under the name of Torrox. |

Finally, the indecisive Torrox joins the rebels, while the Andalusian
villages of Archez and Salares will hear no more the Muslim voice summoning
the faithful to prayer since the beautiful minarets built in the 13th
century. There was no other way. The suffered and subjugated Moorish
community had just chosen the only possible way: the war and the death.
Some inhabitants of these villages used to grow, others used to sell sugar, honey and sweet potatoes in the capital of the kingdom and surroundings and other ones used to fish in this coast. |

What people call fort is a strong tower with four corners. The first floor
is made of brick and there are two more floors made of wood. Next to this
tower there is a house with two rooms with very good walls from which
we can pass to the tower by a drawbridge. It is situated in a secure place.
The entrance has a square with a wall all around. The high fortification
comes near the village. The neighbours of Torrox, agreed with the mayor, guaranteed the security measures in those places they thought were necessary: to do guard duty, for example, or the like. And when they thought the village was in danger, they had to protect themselves in this fortification not to be hurt. |

Rebels guided by the priest of Riogordo village, Antonio Muñoz, had found
a chance shelter. The French captains foresaw a quick victory, however
Muñoz called his men together and thanks to an unexpected attack on bigger
troops, he got to break through the mountains leaving numerous casualties
on the invader. 970 houses with two or more flats, with irregular and tortuous streets that remember its Moorish structure, compose the village of Torrox. It has two squares with tree lined avenues and stone benches: the first one is the Constitución square where it is placed the City Hall - that it is also the prison. |

Among the crew of Colon's boats there was Luis de Torres, Jewish of origin.
He was the interpreter Colon boarded on Santa Maria vessel because of
his Oriental language knowledge. Torrox is situated in a hillside of tortuous mountains. It has 400 neighbours. Its mean production is the sugar: it has two sugar factories. Its castle with artillery is on the coast 5.5 kilometres from Torrox. It guards the beach and along the coast of Granada kingdom there are a lot of towers with 5.5 kilometres between each one. The village was founded by the Moorish. In the hermitage of Ntra. Sra. de la Nieves, situated on the outskirts of the village, sea direction, there is an hermit. He worked in this hermitage and he has been an hermit there since a year. |

There was a widening called Los Caños. It was a sort of small square with
a huge fountain made of marble. It has six spouts of water (caños de
agua ) from which its name derived. These spouts came down to a huge
pond, like a great trough made also of marble. December 26th. In two
hours the pacific inhabitants of Torrox counted 26 horrible oscillations
that destroyed the hamlet. The spectacle filled them with consternation
and a lot of people of the village emigrated. The Almanzor route runs
throught the central part of Torrox village. Following the decorative
tiles, history traces and very attractive sites can be seen in Torrox.
